Guatemala – March 2024

Duration: 10 days
Alyra’s team is developing an lifetime trip experience for a high school that will combine learning the history of  the mayas, cultural immersion, beautiful series of villages, each with a mix of colonial architecture in indigenous tones and experiencing excursions in nature. The most important objective is to accomplish a project with a positive impact in order to improve the quality of life in a village of the Chimaltenango department.

PART 1 – Days 1-6   Project with a positive impact in Chimaltenango department

    • Project with a positive impact in the regional park “Astillero” of Parramos

    • Coffee production workshop

    On some of the days students will be divided into groups that will follow a coordinated rotation between work and leisure time, with the goal of creating a balance between productivity and fun workshops. The objective is to give the opportunity to the students to discover the cultural life of the village while participating in activities with local villagers.

    • Dance lesson.
    • Spanish lesson.
    • Piñata workshop with traditional colours, figures, shapes and designs.
    • Cooking workshop.
    • Learning about the coffee process and the coffee cupping that it is a technique used by cuppers to evaluate the quality of their coffee, including its aroma and flavour.
    • Play a soccer game with locals.

    Day 1: overnight flight.
    Day 2: arrival on Guatemala in the morning
    4 nights in a local hostel in the community

    PART 2 – Days 7-8  Atitlan lake

      • Discover the beautiful town of San Lucas Toliman:  colourful street art and an impressive collection of mosaics.

      • Lake Atitlan boat excursion.

      • Explore the fauna and flora in the Atitlan Reserve.

      • Kayak in Atitlan Lake.

      2 nights in San Lucas de Toliman

      PART 3 – Days 9-10  Antigua, the oldest colonial city in Central America

        • Guided visit of Antigua with detailed history of the colonial city.

        Day 9: international flight to Montreal at night. Arrival  in Montreal in the morning of day 10

          June 24,2022: 300$ non-refundable
          September 23,2022 : 1000$
          December 15,2022 : 1000$
          January 20, 2023: To be determined (bases on # of travelers) as per price table.

          Insurance policy

          If you wish to buy a travel insurance policy, please make a separate payment. Send an email to info@alyraexpeditions.com to request the insurance policy. Alyra will send you a confirmation to do the purchase.

          PAYMENT  METHODS

          1. CHEQUE  – Please  address  any  cheque  payment  to ALYRA EXPEDITIONS. 
          Please  clearly  indicate  1)  the  name  of  the  Traveler  along  with  2) the  trip  code  (PRO 2303 GUA MCGEE)  on  the  cheque.
          All  fees  due  to  NSF  cheques  (non  sufficient  funds)  will  be  the  responsibility  of  the  traveler. Please bring the check to the school and give it to Jessica White.

          Cancellation / Modifications By The Traveler

          In case of cancellation, the Traveller, even in cases of events outside of their control. The minimum cancellation fees are as follows:

          a) 121 days or more prior to departure: 1st deposit of 300$

          b) 91 to 120 days prior to departure: 50% of trip package

          c) 46 to 90 days prior to departure:75% of trip package

          d) 45 days or fewer prior to departure: 100% of package

          Travel documents
          A valid passport that expires at least 6 months after the date of your return flight back home.

          Luggage
          The least amount of luggage possible. We recommend bags that are practical and easy to carry. One large bag and a small day back-pack is ideal.

          Health
          We recommend you consult your local medical travel clinic (or doctor) a few months before leaving in order to ensure you have the necessary vaccines. Your medical insurance card might not cover costs incurred due to injuries or health costs when you are abroad. If you need to travel with medication of some kind, please bring a doctor’s prescription.

          Safety
          We recommend you bring a concealed belt that can hold your important documents, credit cards and currencies. It is illegal to take any objects found in archeological sites or any natural resources from any of the national parks, ecological reserves, protectorates or any other sites visited.

        • These prices include

          • The international flights from Montreal;
          • 0.1% for the OPC’s FICAV (Consumer Protection Office) tax ($1 per $1000);
          • Alyra’s CO (Creative Organizer) accompanying the group 24/7;
          • Private transportation;
          • Lodging in multiple occupancy for the students ;
          • Lodging: single occupancy for supervisors;
          • Food: 3 meals a day (local authentic food will be served);
          • Snacks and potable water during the trip;
          • Organization of the community projects and coordination with the local community leader and members;
          • Non-alcoholic drinks and potable water during meals;
          • Activities/visits mentioned with local guides (when mentioned);
          • Tips to local guides, drivers, restaurants, etc. ;
          • Entrance tickets for museums, parks, sites, etc mentioned in the itinerary.
