Norway – February 2024

Duration: 10 days
Location: Rjukan, Bergen, the “Norway in a nutshell” and Oslo

Norway

PART I – Days 1-4 :  Oslo and Rjukan

    • Experience a 5 hour snowshoe trip in the footsteps of the world famous saboteur group at Vemork under WWII.
    • Visit of Vemork where a museum tells the story of one of the most daring sabotage missions during the Second World War.
    • Cross country skiing at Gausta: the cross-country trails at destination Gausta passes through varied terrain. Here you find circular tracks, as well as longer tours that will take you up on the bare mountain. Overall, 85 km groomed trails.
    • Taste the local specialty rjomegraut (sour cream porridge).
    • Taste the world’s second-best cheese, also made in the area.
    Day 1: Overnight flight to Oslo Day 2: Arrival in Oslo at night 1 night in a hostel in Oslo 2 nights in a Mountain Lodge at Rjukan Private transport from Oslo to Rjukan (2h30)

    PART II - Days 5-7 :  Bergen and the “Norway in a nutshell”

      • Take the train from Oslo to Bergen: the Bergen Line, the most popular scenic Norwegian train journey. The train passes through beautiful mountain scenery from Oslo to Gol and Geilo, up through the Hallingdal valley towards Finse in the high mountains, and along the gorgeous Hardangerjøkulen glacier, before descending towards Bergen. This train travels through a stunning cross-section of Norwegian landscapes along the way. Fields, fjords, forest and mountains.
      • Hike up to the Mount Ulriken, the highest of the seven mountains surrounding Bergen
      • Take a stroll along the historic harbour and visit the famous "Bryggen" with its charming wooden buildings listed as a UNESCO world heritage site.
      • Experience the “Norway in a nutshell” from the return from Bergen to Oslo: the journey has several highlights, such as the Flåmsbana - one of the world's most beautiful train journeys, a fjord cruise on Nærøyfjorden and Aurlandsfjorden, and the Nærøydalen valley, also a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
      • Take a electric boat as you cruise through UNESCO-protected scenery of fjord of the Nærøyfjord. Norway’s longest and deepest fjord, which stretches 204 kilometres inland from the coast north of Bergen. According to UNESCO, the landscape around the fjord arm Nærøyfjorden is “among the most scenically outstanding anywhere.”

    PART III – Days 8-10 : Oslo

      • Visit the Norwegian Museum of Cultural History (Norsk Folkemuseum), Norway’s largest museum of cultural history,offers a glimpse, through its well-curated collections, into how people lived in Norway from 1500 to the present day. The hundred and sixty buildings of the open air museum represent different regions in Norway, different time periods, as well as differences between town and country, and social classes. The Gol Stave Church, dating back to the thirteenth century, is one of five medieval buildings at the museum. Contemporary history is presented through exhibitions and documentation projects. Permanent indoor exhibitions include folk art, folk costumes, toys and Sami culture.
      • Discover the harbour promenade’s cutting edge architecture. The river walk takes you past forested areas, historical buildings, fishing and swimming spots. Oslo’s new harbour promenade is an urban adventure unlike any other: Soothing nature on one hand, world-class architecture, culture and food on the other.
      • Warm up in a sauna, dip in a fjord: Experience a rejuvenating dip in the cool fjords after relaxing in a warm, floating sauna.

        Travel documents

        A valid passport that expires at least 6 months after the date of your return flight back home.

        Luggage

        The least amount of luggage possible. We recommend bags that are practical and easy to carry. One large bag and a small day back-pack is ideal.

        Health

        We recommend you consult your local medical travel clinic (or doctor) a few months before leaving in order to ensure you have the necessary vaccines. Your medical insurance card might not cover costs incurred due to injuries or health costs when you are abroad. If you need to travel with medication of some kind, please bring a doctor’s prescription.

        Safety

        We recommend you bring a concealed belt that can hold your important documents, credit cards and currencies. It is illegal to take any objects found in archeological sites or any natural resources from any of the national parks, ecological reserves, protectorates or any other sites visited.

        Cancellation / Modifications By The Traveler

        In case of cancellation, the Traveller, even in cases of events outside of their control. The minimum cancellation fees are as follows:

        • a) 121 days or more prior to departure: 1st deposit 
        • b) 91 to 120 days prior to departure: 50% of trip package
        • c) 46 to 90 days prior to departure:75% of trip package
        • d) 45 days or fewer prior to departure: 100% of package
      • These prices include

        • The international flights from Montreal;
        • Alyra’s CO (Creative Organizer) accompanying the group 24/7;
        • Local transportation;
        • Lodging: multiple occupancy for students;
        • Lodging: double occupancy for supervisors;
        • Food: 3 meals a day (local authentic food will be served);
        • Potable water during the trip;
        • Non-alcoholic drinks and potable water during meals;
        • Activities/visits mentioned with local guides (when mentioned);
        • Tips to local guides, drivers, restaurants, etc.;
        • Entrance tickets for museums, parks, sites, etc mentioned in the itinerary ;
        • 0.35% for the OPC’s FICAV (Consumer Protection Office) tax ($3.50 per $1000);
        • Insurance Package with Manulife: Youth Exclusive plan – medical, Interruption and Cancelation coverage.
      • These prices do not include

        • Visa expenses (for non-canadian passports);
        • Snacks during the trip;
